Russian Military Drill

February 15th, 2011 Permalink

AP reported this week that “NATO was not impressed by Russia’s military performance after two large maneuvers in 2009 because its forces relied on aging equipment, lacked transport and suffered from manpower shortages, according to a leaked U.S. diplomatic cable.” Russian soldiers were often forced, as the Norwegian newspaper states, to coordinate their actions with their personal mobile phones, and the greatest threat to the Russian air fighters presents Russia’s own defense missile system. These guys are the cadets. They are the kids who’ve joined military school for boys. Many of them, after graduation, will pursue a military career. (8 photos total)

The organisation became internationally known for going topless to protest against sex tourists, sexism and other social ills. Some of the goals of the organisation are: “To develop leadership, intellectual and moral qualities of the young women in Ukraine” and “To build up the image of Ukraine, the country with great opportunities for women”. As of late April 2010 the organisation is contemplating becoming a political party to run for seats in the next Ukrainian parliamentary election. (19 photos total)

Illegal immigration in Russia

Since the fall of Soviet Union, Russia attracts illegal immigrants from the other former Soviet republics. Most of these people are trying to make some money for they families back home. They live in awful conditions while working crappy jobs in Russia for little money. They often get caught by the Russian immigration service and get deported back. Overall, their story is very similar to the illegal immigrants in the USA – a sad and endless saga of the poor people. (5 photos total)
