FEMEN and Ukraine’s Political Drama

June 20th, 2011 Permalink

During the previous administration, Yulia Tymoshenko rose to the position of Prime Minister, the presidents right hand man … or lady in this case. She managed to grab most of Ukraine’s energy resources in the process, made ridiculous amounts of money through bribery and corruption, and almost rose to the position of President. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t quite make it to president.
Today, instead of a traditional court visit by Tymoshenko, there were three of “Tymoshenko”. Femen activists tempted police with boobs and money trying to negotiate freedom of speech and anti corruption policies. Ukraine’s political arena has always been a point of global ridicule, so the ladies of FEMEN decided to take it one step further. Three ladies, dressed as Yulia Tymoshenko, armed with ample amounts of money and their luscious breasts, stormed the courthouse.
They threw money at the police, begging for their freedom (coincidentally, this is standard operating procedure when arrested in Ukraine). They revealed their breasts hoping for a little more leniency. Lets hope with all that money, and a little bear tit, Yulia’s farcical trial may be edged her way a bit. (2 photos total)

FEMEN prepare for Valentine’s Day

Members of the FEMEN women’s movement are preparing a Boobsprint on canvas in the shape of hearts for the Day of Lovers, which is celebrated on February 14. A Boobsprint is an imprint of the painted bare breasts of young girls on a canvas. FEMEN is a Ukrainian protest group based in Kiev, founded in 2008. The organisation became internationally known for going topless to protest against sex tourists, sexism and other social ills. Some of the goals of the organisation are: “To develop leadership, intellectual and moral qualities of the young women in Ukraine” and “To build up the image of Ukraine, the country with great opportunities for women”. As of late April 2010 the organisation is contemplating becoming a political party to run for seats in the next Ukrainian parliamentary election. (19 photos total)
